Voice - My PURPOSE Statement

“Keep reminding yourself: I get what I think about,

whether I want it or not.” -Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

After I discovered my Phlegmatic-melancholy personality, I soon realized I needed to focus next on my self-talk, because I was starting to see how truly powerful my negative thoughts were.  Just like Dr. John A. Schindler says, “A person has to start in the present to acquire some maturity so that the future may be better than the past.  The present and the future depend on learning new habits and new ways of looking at old problems.  There simply isn’t any future in digging continually into the past… the underlying emotional problem has the same common denominator in every [person].  This common denominator is that the [person] has forgotten how, or probably never learned how, to control his present thinking to produce enjoyment.”

I wanted so desperately for my future to be better than my past and I realized my present way of thinking was leading me down a path of anxiety and depression and misery.  So, I read the book, What to Say When You Talk to Your Self by Shad Helmstetter, PH.D.  In chapter 8, I learned about the Self-Management Sequence: 1. Programming creates beliefs, 2. Beliefs create attitudes, 3. Attitudes create feelings, 4. Feelings determine actions and 5. Actions create results.  Since I wasn't loving my miserable results, I knew I needed to change something, and in order to change my results I needed to start at the beginning and change my “programming” or the lenses through which I see life.

That is where self-talk comes in.  Dr. Helmstetter states,“Self-talk is a way to override our past negative programming by erasing or replacing it with conscious, positive new directions.  Self-talk is a way to live our lives by active intent rather than by passive acceptance.” (WtSWYTtYS, Shad, pg. 72)  The whole purpose of an affirmation, or purpose, statement is to create a new positive direction for yourself, starting TODAY!  So that is exactly what I set out to do.

My Purpose Statement
Written June 3, 2015
I am a daughter of God and a valiant disciple of Jesus Christ.  I am sensitive to the still, small voice of the Spirit.  Today I will listen and follow all spiritual promptings straightway.  I am consistent in regular temple attendance, as well as, daily prayers and scripture study.
My life is full of confidence, courage, and service to others. I am excellent at loving the people God brings into my life wholeheartedly.  I have a natural passion for learning, and I study all I can, to better myself, and bless those around me.
My marriage to AJ is eternal and I grow closer to him every day.  I nurture—with tenderness—our children: S, L, A and B; helping them to develop a relationship with Christ and a firm testimony of the Gospel.  Today I am balancing my time between personal refinement, inspiring others and creating memories with my family and friends.
I edify, compliment and uplift others everywhere I go; exposing their worthiness and value.  I am blessed with great wealth and express my gratitude through charity and service to others.  My body is a temple and I take great care to treat it respectfully and keep it healthy.  I have a sound mind and I guard what I allow to enter my thoughts.
I have been called to teach, testify and defend the sanctity of the family and marriage while exemplifying true Christ-like charity to all.  I have a burning desire to build a life of lasting legacy.
